Okuama: Delta Monarch Surrenders Self To Police

One of eight individuals wanted by Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in connection with the killing of 16 soldiers in Okuama on March 14, has turned himself in to the police.He presented himself at Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba at 9:20 pm on Thursday. Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Abaniwonda, verified the news in a telephone conversation last night, stating, “Yes, I can confirm that the traditional ruler is in our custody. He surrendered himself to us at police headquarters in Asaba last night. We will hand him over to the military, which has declared him wanted.”

HRM Clement Ikolo, Urukpe 1, who allegedly assumed the throne amid controversy on November 16, 2023, was seventh on the list released by DHQ yesterday morning.

Okuama community, where the tragic incident occurred claiming the lives of 17 soldiers, including the Commanding Officer of 181 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Lt. Col. A. H. Ali, Major S.D. Shafa, Major D.E. Obi, and Captain U. Zakari, is one of 17 communities in Ewu Kingdom under the traditional jurisdiction of the wanted monarch.

During a biweekly update on military operations across the country in Abuja, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, emphasized that Nigeria must never allow such incidents to recur, highlighting the importance of the armed forces as agents of stability employing various measures to achieve desired outcomes.

9. The Defence Headquarters has said troops neutralized 121 terrorists, apprehended 253 and rescued 244 kidnapped victims in different operations across the country in one week. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen. Edward Buba disclosed this while giving an update on military operations on Thursday in Abuja.

10. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, on Thursday, said it has uncovered fraudulent methods used by syndicates to sell rice below the claimed weight at the Garki Modern Market, Abuja. The commission in a statement signed by its acting Executive Vice Chairman, Adamu Abdullahi, said the fraudulent practice was discovered after a targeted enforcement operation at the modern market.

Initiated during former Governor Godwin Emefiele's tenure, the Salary Bailout Facility (SBF) aimed to ease fiscal pressures by clearing salary arrears. Though current CBN governor Olayemi Cardoso halted the program due to economic constraints, it remains a vital intervention for state financial challenges.

Despite disbursing ₦457.17 billion to the states, only ₦117.21 billion has been repaid as principal, with ₦45.21 billion in interest. Notably, top beneficiaries included Imo, Kogi, Kano, Oyo, and Osun.

The inability to pay salaries has raised concerns, especially with calls for a minimum wage increase. Many states resorted to bank loans last year to meet salary obligations, indicating financial strain.

Furthermore, 24 states couldn't pay salaries without federal allocations, highlighting financial vulnerability. Experts advocate for increased revenue generation and financial innovations, like Public-Private Partnerships, to reduce reliance on bailout facilities.

Despite promises to reduce borrowing and focus on revenue, the Federal Government's domestic debt reached ₦4.94 trillion in President Bola Tinubu's first six months, hindering economic growth. Experts stress prudent fiscal management and debt reduction strategies to achieve positive economic outcomes.

Several states close to the Federal Capital Territory are expected to face strong winds, according to a warning issued by the Federal Government's Federal Emergency Management.

The agency said in a statement on Wednesday, signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, that Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna states near the Federal Capital Territory are among the states likely to experience strong winds. The forecast also indicated that Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa states are at risk of the same hazard. The agency warned that the forceful winds could cause displacements and damage to vulnerable structures in some cases. 

The agency issued a statement informing the public that very strong winds are anticipated to affect Nasarawa, Niger and Kaduna states, which are in close proximity to the Federal Capital Territory, within the next three days. The statement also mentioned that other states that will also encounter strong winds during this period are Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno and Adamawa. The forecast highlighted a moderate risk of hazards that may arise due to the strong winds, such as damage to buildings and infrastructure. The agency’s Director General, Dr Abbas Idriss, stated that FEMA is keeping a close watch on the situation as climatic changes in some of these states, particularly Nasarawa, may have an impact on the Federal Capital Territory. He advised residents to exercise caution during heavy rain and avoid driving through areas that are flooded with water. He also appealed to the public to clear any blocked drains and refrain from constructing buildings near water channels that could obstruct the flow of water.

Governor Akeredolu has not disclosed the nature of his current ailment or where he is receiving treatment. His spokesperson said he is only taking a vacation and will resume work on 6th July. Some opposition parties, such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP), have called on him to hand over to his deputy to avoid a constitutional crisis.

Falz Reacts To Seun Kuti’s Arrest, Questions IGP Over Unchecked Cases Of Police Brutality

Nigerian rapper, Falz has reacted to the arrest of Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, who assaulted a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

On Tuesday, Seun Kuti was arraigned before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court to face charges of assaulting a police officer, a violation of Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

The police asked the court to remand Kuti for 21 days, but the magistrate ordered that the defendant be remanded for 48 hours to allow the police to conclude their investigation.

The court ruled that “after 48 hours, the defendant will be granted bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties, a three years tax payment receipt that is verifiable; one of the sureties must have a landed property within the court jurisdiction.”

The magistrate adjourned the case for mention to May 23, 2023.

Taking to his Twitter page, the rapper shared several videos of policemen physically assaulting citizens and asked the IG to use the same energy to indict and punish erring officers.

Although Falz condemned assault on police officers, he lamented that the cases where policemen harass and brutalize civilians without any consequence is now the order of the day.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, stood up to announce his appearance as the first petitioner. Following him, the Labour Party’s national women leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, announced her appearance as the second representative of the party.

However, while Obi and Manuga were speaking, Lamidi Apapa, the factional chairman of the Labour Party, stood up to identify himself.

Despite not being given a microphone, he declared himself as the chairman of the party and interrupted Manuga, asserting that he was the true representative of the Labour Party.

The five-man panel of the court, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, expressed clear displeasure with the unfolding situation. The judge made it clear that they would not recognize anyone claiming to represent the Labour Party. He acknowledged Obi’s appearance as the first petitioner but did not acknowledge any representatives from the party.

Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party, was present in court but did not announce his appearance.

This development stems from a crisis that arose when two separate courts in Abuja and Edo issued conflicting orders regarding the recognition of different leadership factions within the political party.

The spokesperson for the PDP’s presidential campaign council, Dino Melaye, warned the governors not to rejoice over Atiku’s loss because they also lost their bid for senatorial seats

Melaye also noted that the governors cannot claim glory for Atiku’s loss since they also failed to deliver their senatorial election.

At the recently concluded 2023 presidential election, Atiku finished second behind the former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu with Peter Obi of the Labour Party coming third.

Since the declaration of the 2023 presidential election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the G5 governors have continued to gloat over Atiku’s loss.

The G5 governors are Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, Seyi Makinde of Oyo state and Samuel Ortom of Benue state.

Three out of the four governors lost their senatorial election, except Makinde who is seeking a second term and Wike who never contested for any elective position.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission and its chairman have been accused of delivering a caricature show as the presidential election to Nigerians.

The allegation was made by Dino Melaye, a former lawmaker who represented Kogi West senatorial district at the 8th Assembly.

Melaye said that the naira redesign of the Federal Government, which the Central Bank of Nigeria championed, was aimed at deceiving Nigerians.

In other news, Pastor Sarah Omakwu of the Family Worship Centre said that Bola Tinubu is not the true president-elect for Nigeria.

The lead pastor of the church warned that Tinubu is a president-elect for the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the ruling party.

According to the preacher, a new president-elect who will emerge through a fair, credible and transparent process will be declared.

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said he will not be part of the campaigns for governorship and state assembly candidates for the elections on Saturday, March 11.

Obi on Wednesday tweeted that he has to be in Abuja in the company of lawyers.

INEC is seeking to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) it used to conduct the 2023 presidential election. But Obi moved a motion requesting the court to restrain INEC to reconfigure BVAS.

“I am supposed to commence our whistle-stop campaign for our various Labour Party Governorship and State Assembly Candidates today,” Obi tweeted. “Initially, my trip was to take me to Nasarawa, Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Plateau, Borno, etc.

“However, following INEC’s refusal to allow our party to inspect the materials (including BVAS) from the 25th February presidential elections, I am personally heading to the Court today with our lawyers.”

However, Obi urged the party supporters to campaign massively for their candidates.

“As we pursue due process and defer to the rule of law, I urge all the OBIdients in the various states to continue campaigning for our candidates, namely, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour in Lagos, Chijoke Edeoga in Enugu, Patrick Dakum in Plateau, Alex Otti in Abia, Ken Pela in Delta, Ibrahim Mshelia in Borno, to name just a few. It is also imperative that Obidients vote for candidates with Competence, Character, Capacity, and Compassion.

“I remain committed and will give more attention to our mission of retrieving our mandate. A new Nigeria is possible!”

The outcome of the presidential elections saw Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling party declared winner by INEC.

INEC announced that Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 6,984,520 votes.

Obi got 6,101,533 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) came a distant fourth with 1,496,687.

He made this criticism in a post through his micro blogging platform, Twitter.

He accused the APC governorship candidate of decorating his home town, Orogun with all the allocated federal projects.

He revealed the five projects as:

Independent Power Plant.

Appeal Court Asks ASUU To Resume Immediately

An Abuja Court of Appeal on Friday ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing strike.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the appellate court stated that calling off the strike is the only condition that the union’s request to appeal the ruling of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) which ordered ASUU to call off its strike will be given effect.

The court on Friday urged university lecturers to return to classrooms as soon as possible.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the Appeal Court had asked the parties to explore the option of an out-of-court settlement. However, an agreement was not reached by both the Federal Government and ASUU.

Recall that several meetings between ASUU and the federal government have ended in a deadlock.

Consequently, the federal government went to court to challenge the industrial action.
