This is more like giving the citizens bread with right hand and collecting double back with the left hands. Just yesterday, the government announced to give 10 million Nigerians free internet and today MTN is set to increase the price of SME data by almost 50%.

This is not the first time SME data price will be increased; it was increased in December last year and about to be increase again come August 21 2018.

According to the official text message sent to all SME data sellers;

Dear Customer, from August 21, 2018, the following prices will apply to MTN SME Data Share: 10GB at N7,500; 20GB at N14,000; 50GB at N30,000. Thank you.

Once the above price takes effect from the 21 of August 2018, you may no longer be able to buy 1GB for N600 , 2GB for N1200 , 3GB for N1750 from any third party data reseller again. I don’t
know what the price will be but I’m sure the price will make you consider between buying from third party reseller or directly from MTN.

People are making use of WhatsApp calls, skype calls, Viber etc. at the expense of traditional calls and this threatens the telecom industry and the jobs at Airtel, MTN and Zamtel.

The cabinet has approved an executive order that would see the introduction of N10 ($0.03) daily tariff charged on Internet calls. “Jobs such as call centre workers, talk time sellers, conventional call technicians will reduce drastically if more Zambians migrate to internet calls and create jobs in America and elsewhere … said Zambia government.

The government claims over 80% of the country mobile subscribers are using internet calls, and thus the need to tax the growing trend.

You’ll recall that about Uganda initiated this move imposing a tax of $0.05 daily on the users of “over-the-top” platform.

Gradually the move to regulate social media is extending to other African country and we don’t know which country is next but this must never cross to Nigeria.

Instagram Now Let You Private Poll Via DM

Instagram now allows users to send polls to others through direct messages on its platform.

The new feature works similarly to adding the poll sticker to stories, but users will be able to select the users who receive the story.

This creates a group chat in which invited participants can vote and view the poll results in real time. You’ll recall that Instagram rolled out its poll sticker sometimes in October 2017 and we’ve seen amazing features launched such emoji slider , Instagram tv, ask a question and lots more to enhance its Stories tool.

Sending polls via direct message is a welcome development and it’s available for Android and iOS devices. Update your app to choose who you want poll with.

Starting from today, you can send a poll privately in Direct. Update your app to choose who you want to poll – whether it’s everyone in a big group thread or just your very best friend. Update your app now to try it!

Russian Hackers Stole Hundreds Of Instagram Accounts This Month

If you’ve discovered that you can no longer log into your Instagram account, and trying to reset your credential leads nowhere because the account is linked to a Russia-based email domain, you’re not alone.

It turns out that what appears to be a Russian attack left hundreds of Instagram users without access to their accounts, some of them in excess of a few thousands of followers. Even users who had two-factor authentication (2FA) turned on discovered that their accounts were breached.

The recovery, as expected, is a tedious process that might lead to nowhere for the time being.

It’s Mashable with details on various instances of Instagram users who discovered they could no longer log into their accounts. Contact details including phone number and email addresses were changed (see below). Similarly, profile images were modified and even links to Facebook profiles.

Instagram users have been complaining on Twitter and Reddit about the matter, and that’s how Mashable discovered that the attacks intensified this month, with more than 5,000 tweets from 899 people mentioning Instagram hacks in just the last seven days.

Instagram says it hasn’t seen an uptick in hacks, but it sure looks like the hacks intensified in August, based on Twitter activity and Google Trends records.

“We work hard to provide the Instagram community with a safe and secure experience,” Instagram said in a statement. “When we become aware of an account that has been compromised, we shut off access to the account, and the people who’ve been affected are put through a remediation process so they can reset their password and take other necessary steps to secure their accounts.”

Restoring access to an account that no longer has your phone number and email address can be burdensome, and the process is hindered by Instagram’s automated practices set in place for account recoveries.

“The maze that Instagram sends you on to get your account back is laughable and leads to broken/dead links and emails from robots which lead nowhere,” Abagail Nowak, an affected Instagram user, told the site.

What’s more worrisome is that 2FA authentication was also broken, which seems to indicate that hackers can steal whatever account they desire.

It’s unclear how the hackers were able to log into those accounts in the first place. But, as always, make sure all your online accounts are protected by unique, hard to guess or hack, passwords.

It’s also unclear why Russian hackers are stealing these accounts, but Russia has been proven to have abused social media to influence US elections. Maybe that’s what they’re doing again, especially if they’re targeting users who have a decent amount of followers.

Then again, it’s also possible that someone is trying to make it look like Russia is behind the hacks. It’s also possible that a 400-pound person is doing all of this from their own bedroom. Why? Good question.

Hopefully, Facebook will soon shed some light on these Instagram hacks, especially if the attackers are picking up the pace.

Tips To Make Your Android Phone More Secured

Malware makers, phishers, they really are all out to get you. Even though Android itself is a fairly secure platform, some data about your phone’s settings and usage is sent to Google’s servers.

But here is how you can keep your Android smartphone secure from data collection.

>>Turn On Your Device Manager

Device manager allows you to track down a missing Android phone. You can easily locate a missing android device by simply clicking on “find my Phone” or trigger a remote wipe and it will wipe all the entire data on that smartphone.

Open the Settings app
Tap on the ‘Google’ menu option
Scroll down to ‘Security,’ then tap ‘Find My Device’
Make sure the switch at the top is set to ‘On.’

>>Set a Lock Screen Password:

Biometric authentication methods like fingerprints and retinas are designed for convenience, not security. If you want to keep the data on your phone as safe as possible, you need to set a lock that only you know.

For Android 8.o Oreo and newer:

Open the Settings app
Select ‘Security & location’, then select ‘Screen lock’
Choose a PIN, pattern, or password lock

For Android 7.0 Nougat and older:

1: Open the Settings app
2: Select the ‘Security’ menu option
3: Tap ‘Screen lock’

>>Disable Tracking Activity:

Google by defaults stores every information about you from the movies you watch, the site you visit, YouTube Videos etc. In other words, Google is watching you. None of this information is sent to third-parties

If you don’t like this, you can simply disable ‘activity tracker’ by going here. Just turn off all categories and you are good to go.

Finally, Tech experts also advice that you should always switch search engine or switch browsers for security reasons.

From your browser, you can easily switch your search engineOp

Instagram New Feature “Ask A Question” Gradually Rolling Out

To all Instagram lovers, we have a new feature dubbed ‘ask a question’, and its currently rolling out to Android users.

The Facebook-owned company has added the ability to ask questions in its Stories, a feature I’m surprised wasn’t already there, after rolling out the option to add soundtracks to your Stories.

Stories on Instagram already feature yes/no polls, emoji sliders that users can bundle with questions. The new ability enables followers to ask questions or roast the story uploader as well.

For example, in the screenshot above, you could roast the story-poster in as much excruciating detail as you’d like.

The new feature appears to be slowly rolling out to Android users but not to all. Let us know if the feature is already feasible on your instagram app.

WhatsApp Group Admin Can Now Restrict Members From Sending Messages

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app is gradually rolling out a new feature to the app dubbed Send Messages.

The new capabilities now allow admins of WhatsApp groups to control the ability of participants to send messages in the particular group. This means that all other participants, when “Only Admins” is selected for the Send Messages option, won’t be able to send in the group text messages, images, videos, voice messages etc..

The new Send Messages option will now accompany the Edit Group Info that was available under Group Settings with the same two settings – All Participants and Only Admins.

The feature will be accessible even if the group has just one admin. Additionally, all participants in the group will be notified about the developments through broadcast text messages.

How to Access WhatsApp Send Messages

>>Go to your WhatsApp group and open Group info

>>Choose “Send Messages” and you’ll see the options of “only admin”, “all participant” or cancel.

Once you have changed the permission, all participants will be notified in the group with a particular message.

When the option is enabled by an administrator and only admins can send messages, WhatsApp will hide the chat text input bar, showing a particular footer that alerts the user that he cannot send messages.

Is Send Messages Feature Necessary?

You can choose to use the send message feature for various purposes as Group Administrator; for instance, you can enable this option to send important messages in the group without being interrupted by other messages, or you can decide to “close” the group at night to block any messages, to avoid any disturbances in the group or possible spam messages from some uncultured group members.

This update is currently rolling out to WhatsApp beta version on 2.18.201 for Android and stable version 2.18.70 on iPhone.

The feature will reportedly roll out soon for users of stable Android version 2.18.191 soon, as well as for Windows Phone.

You May Soon Be Paying To Use Social Media In Nigeria

Like play like play, what happened in Uganda may likely happen in Nigeria. Ugandan’s are now paying to use social media.

Well,  Abdulfatai Buhari the chairman Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime has said that the National Assembly will make laws to regulate what Nigerians do on social media.

According to him, social media should be regulated because many Nigerians are misusing it. If left unregulated, he says, the activities on social media are capable of setting the country on fire, especially as the country approaches national election.

“We have got experts to advise us and we have presented a bill to the senate. The bill has passed the first reading and it has been listed for the second reading.’’

He said a lot of Nigerians make false claims and false accusations on social media to bring down those perceived to be their political enemies.

According to the Chairman, youths should use their ICT talent to develop the country’s economy and not use it to attack one another.

Do you know what the bill contains? Nobody knows, but part of regulating social media means taxing the citizens just like what Uganda and Zambia did.

You may likely be paying to use social media except if this bill is turned down.
