Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu Hands Over Power to Deputy

Ondo Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has handed over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, due to his ill health and need for medical treatment abroad. He submitted a letter to the State House of Assembly, requesting a 21-day leave from 7th June to 6th July, 2023. During his absence, his deputy will act as the governor.

This is not the first time that Governor Akeredolu has faced health challenges and pressure to hand over to his deputy. In July 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19 and was urged by his then deputy, Agboola Ajayi, to hand over power to him after 21 days in self-isolation. However, he refused to do so and recovered from the virus. He later sacked Mr. Ajayi as his deputy after the latter defected to another party

Governor Akeredolu has not disclosed the nature of his current ailment or where he is receiving treatment. His spokesperson said he is only taking a vacation and will resume work on 6th July. Some opposition parties, such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP), have called on him to hand over to his deputy to avoid a constitutional crisis.
