Now that WhatsApp is free…

WhatsApp is the most ubiquitous messaging app on the planet after SMS. The app is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian, as well as S60 and S40 phones. Yes; even relic platforms still have fully functional WhatsApp support till today.

You have likely heard the news that WhatsApp will no longer charge subscription fees. If you hadn’t, now you have. Over the next several weeks, WhatsApp will remove fees from the different versions of their app and will no longer charge you for using it. Does this mean ads will soon show up on your WhatsApp app? Calm down. WhatsApp say they won’t introduce ads either.

“So, how the heck do they intend to make money?”, you ask. Here is WhatsApp’s answer:

Starting this year, we will test tools that allow you to use WhatsApp to communicate with businesses and organizations that you want to hear from. That could mean communicating with your bank about whether a recent transaction was fraudulent, or with an airline about a delayed flight. We all get these messages elsewhere today – through text messages and phone calls – so we want to test new tools to make this easier to do on WhatsApp, while still giving you an experience without third-party ads and spam

Sounds like a plan; right?

While we wait to see the commercial business applications that WhatsApp will be implementing, we can, in the meantime, expect an increase in the uptake and usage of WhatsApp among everyday people. WhatsApp’s snitching ways are still my greatest beef with it. It is the single biggest reason for not using it as my primary messaging app. Till WhatsApp changes that, BBM is it for
